Hot stamping foils consist usually of a polyester support, a separation layer of wax, a translucent coloured varnish layer, which accounts for the colour tone, an aluminium layer for gloss and a hot melt adhesive layer.
During hot stamping the foil is pressed by the heated stamping tool onto the substrate. The wax in the seperation layer melts and the adhesive is activated. The edges of the stamping tool seperate the varnish and aluminium layer from the foil, leaving a solid colour area after the pressure of the tool ceases and backing foil is lifted. Hot stamping foils are supplied in rolls of varying widths.
Hot stamping foils are precision materials, which in the required quality are only supplied by a few manufacturers. The versatility of use of hot stamping foils is much increased by integrating different patterns and effects, such as colours and metallic effects, different gloss, designs (coloured pictures or patterns) and holograms.
